The Client
Our clients state-of-the-art Herefordshire plant is the heart of cider country. Over 100,000 tonnes of harvested apples are milled each year and used to produce some of the UK’s best known ciders. The plant has seen over £58 million of investment over recent years to maintain its place as the home of global cider production.
The Project
Our client inherited the Hereford site after acquiring several brands. The site required some upgrading, including the CO2 recovery unit. The refurbishment of the CO2 recovery unit building had a time-critical completion day due to the new CO2 plant equipment arriving from Mainland Europe that had no flexibility on the delivery date.
Starfish Construction has a proven track record of undertaking multi-disciplined building refurbishment with minimum disruption to the rest of the operational site. Our ability to demonstrate a safe and secure working zone on several previous projects, along with our project management was a crucial factor to Starfish Construction winning the contract.

Challenges and Solutions
The scope of works involved the removal and disposal of a significant number of wall and roof cladding, which included stripping asbestos sheets, and installing new roof and wall composite sheets externally as well as an internal liner cladding to ensure a clean environment was established. Further works included the installation of electric roller shutters and pedestrian doors. The painting the steel structure completed this part of the works.
Starfish Construction also carried out significant additional works which included the installation of drainage channels and the development of concrete plinths and resin flooring. This part of the project also included the installation of fencing, crash bollards, plus upgrading the electrics, lighting & fire alarm system and the installation of an HV (High Voltage) & LV (Low Voltage) switchgear room.
Outcome
The ability of Starfish Construction to deliver large-scale multi-disciplined projects was instrumental in ensuring a successful outcome which met all key performance indicators — completed safely, on time, within budget and to the client’s satisfaction. As there was a time-critical element to the project, our ability to finish on time was key to a successful outcome.
