The Client
Scotland may be synonymous with whisky, but gin is fast becoming our other national drink! The popularity of gin has grown over the last decade, with sales in the UK valued at around £2.6 billion, with consumers purchasing 83 million bottles of gin last year.
Our client has been producing one of the UK’s best-known gin brands for over 20 years. With its popularity steadily rising, they invested in a new modern distillery on the site to meet demand and offer a bespoke facility.
The Project
As a long-standing construction services contractor to the client, Starfish Construction took on refurbishing and converting the former distillery into a new Research & Development facility. As a multi-disciplined construction support partner, our project’s scope involved external and internal refurbishment works.

Challenges and Solutions
The old distillery building had become quite dilapidated and required significant upgrading. The primary focus was to remove and dispose of the Galbestos cladding from the roof tower, carried out by our trained operatives. We installed structural steel and a new flat roof system which will perform for a minimum of 25 years.
The project required a complete interior fit-out that included constructing internal block walls and installing mechanical and electrical services. We excavated the existing floor and installed a new underfloor heating system with new floor slabs and a non-slip resin coating system.
Our internal fit-out team then managed all aspects of installing composite cleanroom panels to the walls and ceilings and external pedestrian and roller shutter doors.
Outcome
Starfish Construction conceptualised the entire fit-out and selection of materials for the client to approve. Our ability to provide an end-to-end service, from design to completion, offered the client the confidence of a well-planned and well-managed project. They were delighted with the finished result.
We have given the old distillery building a new lease of life for many years to come. Hopefully, the new Research and Development facility will help produce the next generation of distilled products for our client and their many clients across the globe.
At Starfish Construction, we strive to exceed our client’s expectations. We welcomed the opportunity to assist with the Research & Development facility’s design and bring their ideas to fruition. This project provided the perfect platform for us to demonstrate our capabilities further to deliver clean room environment works.
