The Client
The Wolseley name has a long and illustrious past, producing machinery and was one of the UK’s earliest car manufacturers. Wolseley has been in the plumbing and heating sector since the 1960s, later trading under brands including Plumb Center and Build Center, which has now come full circle back to the Wolseley brand.
Specialist Chartered Building Surveyors, Bradley-Mason, work closely with several key trade merchants, including Wolseley, providing expert advice throughout the lifecycle of clients’ property assets, from acquisition to disposal, along with helping to maintain the condition and value of property portfolios.
The Project
As a previous client, Starfish Construction has provided a range of support and works for Bradley-Mason. These include drone surveys and drone thermal imaging, through to Asbestos removal and complete roofing systems. Bradley-Mason requested a survey and roof upgrade quotation, with the initial brief to install bar & bracket and metal sheet overclad of the Asbestos roof.
Starfish Construction performed an initial drone survey and drone thermal imaging, which confirmed the existing roof was suitable for an overlay system. To meet current U-value calculations, we submitted plans to upgrade the insulation, which the client accepted.

Challenges and Solutions
Ensuring the trade counter, showroom and warehouse remained operational throughout the project was our number one priority. Our site operatives worked closely with the Wolseley staff throughout each phase of the project. It was crucial because of the Asbestos roofing that we sealed off our working areas to protect the team carrying out their duties below.
The scope of works involved the removal and replacement of both the inner and outer skylights. We installed a new TATA® metal sheet roof system with Confidex® Guarantee and fitted new valley and Trimline gutters. Throughout the project, we monitored the air for Asbestos to ensure a safe working environment for Starfish Construction operatives and Wolseley staff.
Outcome
We have provided the client with a new robust roofing system that will be safe and easy to maintain for many years to come. The TATA® roof system Confidex® Guarantee, unlike other guarantees, covers factory cut edges for the entirety of the guarantee period, reducing possible maintenance issues.
Throughout the 12-week project, there were some challenging weather conditions. However, with our work management processes and robust Health and Safety approach, we reduced any disruptions. Wolseley Ayr has continued to provide essential trade products throughout the COVID-19 lockdown. Therefore, our ability to carry out this project while the branch remained operational was vital for them to support trades in the community and the project’s success.
The professionalism and quality of the work carried out by Starfish Construction is always impressive. The Wolseley Ayr project certainly had its challenges, including ensuring the unit was operational throughout. Even the bad weather couldn’t dampen the project and the effective outcome. When our clients are happy, we’re happy - 10 out of 10 all-round for Starfish Construction.
