St George's Island Facade and Balcony Remediation Project New Milestone
We are proud to share an exciting update on our extensive facade and balcony remediation project at St George's Island, Manchester. As the largest Building Safety Fund-supported facade remediation project in the UK, we've reached a significant milestone, with three of the five blocks now completed, with all façade elevations and tenant balconies replaced with compliant materials. In addition to ensuring compliance, these upgrades will significantly extend the building’s lifespan, enhance energy efficiency, and create a more sustainable future for the occupants.
Homes England Recognition
This ambitious project, driven by the Building Safety Fund and supported by Homes England, the government's housing and regeneration agency, further positions Starfish Construction at the forefront of the UK's building safety and remediation sector. The project is progressing ahead of schedule, and we remain on track to deliver the completed works an impressive 10 months earlier than anticipated.
Homes England visited St George's Island twice to witness first-hand the progress and quality of works. The visits allowed us to demonstrate our robust delivery mechanisms and commitment to safety and quality. Additionally, the environmental sustainability measures incorporated into the project, aligning with our commitment to reduce carbon emissions and enhance building longevity, showcase this project as a model for excellence in future facade remediation. The positive feedback following these visits is recognition of our collective team's commitment to the project and improving the safety and living environment for the building occupants.
Bringing Solutions to a Complex Site
The St George's Island site presents unique challenges due to its scale and location, nestled between a canal waterway and railway lines, which requires careful planning and management with authorities. Starfish Construction has worked tirelessly to ensure minimal disruption to residents and the surrounding area.
As a Considerate Contractor, we take pride in our open and transparent communication with property occupants. Our dedicated Resident Liaison Officer and our online Resident's Hub provide real-time updates, informing residents and project stakeholders about project progress and ensuring project information, notices, announcements, and progress are easily accessible to everyone. Our proactive approach ensures a positive experience for all stakeholders as we work toward a safer environment for the building's occupants.
Adam Denton Beaumont, London South Business Hub Director at Starfish Construction

“The St George's Island project is a prime example of how Starfish Construction delivers project safety and compliance and demonstrates our sustainable solutions in the built environment. By upgrading facades and balconies with fire-compliant, energy-efficient materials, we’re extending these buildings’ lifespan and enhancing living conditions for residents. Our approach to sustainable construction reinforces our commitment to environmentally focused solutions that align with the UK’s broader decarbonisation and energy efficiency objectives and goals. The project sets a new standard for facade remediation and continues our leadership in creating safer, greener buildings for the future.”

A Collective Team Bringing Success
The success of the St George's Island project is a testament to the integrated Starfish Construction divisions and team's depth, knowledge and expertise. From the outset, collectively, we've worked seamlessly with precise, detailed project planning, innovative and sustainable building design solutions, and expert management from our commercial division overseeing material partner selection and supply chains, ensuring our tailored solutions optimize the building’s energy performance, contributing to long-term sustainability. Our project managers and on-site operatives continue to deliver exceptional results, ensuring the project's successful, safe and timely progress.
The collaboration between our building design, commercial, and operational teams demonstrates Starfish Construction's capability to manage and deliver on projects of this magnitude and complexity. Our integrated approach has balanced safety, compliance, and sustainability, ensuring that every project decision contributes to safety, energy efficiency and the protection and enhancement of existing buildings, reinventing them for the future.
Safety and Sustainability
At Starfish Construction, safety is at the heart of everything and drives our approach to building remediation. Our commitment to safety extends from education, training and informed decision-making to product selection, site operations and management. Our approach and process management protect people at every project stage and property lifecycle. The materials and methods used in this project comply with those set out by The Building Safety Act, and our reporting and project documentation deliver an effective record for The Golden Thread, ensuring traceability of key decisions and safety information throughout the building’s lifecycle.
Through innovative processes and careful planning, we have ensured that the newly remediated facades and balconies create a safe environment for tenants now and for years to come. By choosing to remediate and refurbish existing structures rather than demolish and rebuild, Starfish Construction contributes to landfill waste reduction and conserving precious natural resources, aligning with the global effort to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.
